Paris (France), 16th December\u00a02021<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/span>Dushow, one of Europe’s leading AV and technical production specialists, recently helped deliver the world\u2019s biggest concert,\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>, as lead technical partner for the\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0event in Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n

Serving as the main official service provider for the broadcast event \u2013 which featured Ed Sheeran, Elton John, Black Eyed Peas, Christine and the Queens, Doja Cat and M\u00e5neskin, as well as special guest performances by Ang\u00e9lique Kidjo, Charlie Puth and Fatma Said, and raised more than US$1bn to fight climate change, famine and vaccine inequity \u2013 Dushow partnered with its video-specialist subsidiary, Alabama, and sister company Magnum to deliver a complete technical solution encompassing audio, LED, lighting, video, cabling and power. This\u00a0<\/span>tour de force<\/em>\u00a0was made possible thanks to the wider Novelty Magnum Dushow group offering organisers a single point of contact for the complex 20,000-person show.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
This year, as part of its \u2018Recovery Plan for the World\u2019 \u2013 a year-long campaign calling on governments, philanthropists and the private sector to commit financially to helping the world beat Covid-19, including funding 1bn vaccines for the poorest countries \u2013 Global Citizen planned its biggest and most ambitious show to date:\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a02021, a 24-hour broadcast event featuring live events across seven continents. Screened live simultaneously from cities including New York, London, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Seoul, Los Angeles, Mumbai and Paris, 25 September\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0was \u2018the closest thing to Live Aid in the streaming age\u2019, said John Taylor of Duran Duran, who performed at both events (in Philadelphia in 1985 and London in 2021).<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0Paris was staged in the heart of Paris, taking over the Champs de Mars and utilising the iconic Eiffel Tower as a spectacular backdrop.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With regional lockdowns still an issue that has necessitated that many workers stay at home, the ability to be able to work remotely on the Powersoft amplifier platforms was an advantage for Pulse in terms of time efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fois continued: \u201cThe monitoring tools in the amplifiers also make it very easy to manage such a massive system and troubleshoot issues when they arise \u2013 if there\u2019s an issue with a particular speaker or speaker line, for example, it\u2019s very simple to connect remotely, navigate to the speaker, check its signal and impedance graph, and identify the problem in a matter of minutes, without setting foot in the venue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The raft of Powersoft products specified for Bla Bla Dubai were distributed between three distinct \u2018AV rooms\u2019. In the first, Pulse installed 13 x T604\u2019s, a In Paris, St\u00e9phane Nicolas of ULTD EVENEMENTS \u2013 who has worked on more than 30 shows on the Champ de Mars \u2013 was brought in as site director. Angelo Gopee, managing director of Live Nation France, served as executive producer for Live Nation, whose CEO, Michael Rapino, is a long-time supporter of Global Citizen, while Anne J\u00e9r\u00f4me, from AJ Com’Conseil, was delegated by Global Citizen as the event director to coordinate the Paris project.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
St\u00e9phane Nicolas explains his decision to appoint Dushow to oversee technical production for the event: \u201cI didn\u2019t want hundreds of suppliers for logistical reasons. I leant towards the Dushow Group as they were able to handle the majority of our requests, which meant I only needed to speak to a few personnel to ensure we were all focused on the same goal.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0The fact\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0was being broadcast around the world also meant Nicolas and Global Citizen needed a technical partner they could rely on, he adds: \u201cBroadcast-focused shows are particularly challenging because all the timings are of the utmost importance and you have to think about camera angles and what the director wants to see.\u201d<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
\u201cAs this was primarily a broadcast event, resolution and screen quality were particularly important,\u201d echoes C\u00e9dric Fr\u00e9con, LED technician for Alabama, the Dushow group company on display duties for the Paris concert, which, along with the other\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0shows, was broadcast on six continents, as well as livestreamed online. \u201cWe needed the best screens possible to look good in front of the cameras.\u201d<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
The show featured two 79.2m\u00b2 IMAG screens, comprising of Absen Altair (AT5 Pro) LED, flanking the stage, and Absen Polaris 3.9mm pixel pitch \u2018ticker screens\u2019 integrated into the STUFISH-designed stage which displayed messages throughout the performances. These LED screens complemented two further 4.2m x 2.4m Absen Altair LED screens on the far delay towers.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
\u201cIt is a live show, of course, but we treated it as a broadcast event from the very beginning,” confirms Alexandre Capponi, director of Dushow\u2019s audio department and head of sound for the Paris Global Citizen event.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
From a sound perspective, the main challenge for Dushow was the site itself, and specifically location in central Paris. \u201cEven with an audience of this size, the fact that we are in central Paris meant we were asked to bring the sound down to 99 dBA, 3dB less than the national limit,\u201d Capponi explains. The sound team were also prevented from using ground subs, \u201cso, except for the front fills, we had to hang the entire system,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Meyer Sound system comprised left and right hangs with clusters of 16 LEO and 12 1100-LFC subwoofers, while each of the four delay towers were equipped with 12 LYON and six 1100-LFC\u201d, adds Capponi, who explains that the delays had to be positioned far enough away from the stage that they wouldn\u2019t appear in the broadcast.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
St\u00e9phane Roussin, director of project management for SETE, the Eiffel Tower operating company, explains how the iconic Paris landmark also played its part in Global Citizen\u2019s fundraising efforts: \u201cThe tower doesn\u2019t have a fixed-install AVL system apart from the architectural lighting with sodium lights, and Magnum had to install lighting gear on the side facing the Champ de Mars.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
\u201cWe did something that we very rarely do, which was to allow the event to control the lighting, including the now iconic sparkle effect,\u201d he adds, \u201cso that the lighting evolved as the event unfolded. The Eiffel Tower actively participated in\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0and really added to this amazing project.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Stage manager Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Hamonou says the fact that nearly everyone working on the event came under one corporate umbrella (the Novelty Magnum Dushow group) made his job \u201cso much easier, in particular in terms of communication\u201d. \u201cAll information is centralised, and it\u2019s much easier and faster to find solutions,\u201d he explains.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>He gives an illustration: \u201cWe had a specific request from Christine and the Queens, who wanted to have a 48m line of [GLP] JDC1s. This took up the entire length of the stage, so we had to adapt to the short set changeovers\u201d \u2013 just six minutes \u2013 \u201cbetween artists. We created interconnected skates under the JDC1s, allowing us to quickly draw back 24m worth of lights from each side of the stage.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
\u201cThis is a great example of how easy it was to work with Dushow: We only had to talk to three or four people and were able to put the skates in place very quickly and simply. Everyone listens to each other and we are able to make things that really work.\u201d<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
Global Citizen raised more than $1.1bn in commitments to fight extreme poverty, as well as securing pledges for over 60 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines for developing countries and 157m new trees to be planted around the world.<\/span>
\u00a0<\/span>
Speaking after the show, Anne J\u00e9r\u00f4me, event director of\u00a0<\/span>Global Citizen Live<\/em>\u00a0Paris, praised Dushow and the wider French team for their hard work, saying Global Citizen was thrilled \u201cby the incredibly smooth organisation\u201d of the Paris event. \u201cThey are amazed by the work done by the French teams,\u201d she told the Paris event\u2019s partners. \u201cYou can be proud of your professionalism, of our French touch, of our \u2018<\/span>savoir recevoir et savoir-faire \u00e0 la fran\u00e7aise\u2019\u2026<\/em>

\u201cI know that setting up a project of such magnitude in such a short time, almost completely remotely and with so many people involved, wasn\u2019t always easy. But we have succeeded in creating an event which will leave a mark in people\u2019s memories after 18 months of a global pandemic and which will contribute to spreading word of this incredible charity, Global Citizen, beyond their borders.\u201d<\/span>
